We had a great event for the commemoration of the Flood of 1955 and it wouldn’t have been possible without your support! Between the tour of the Colebrook dam and our presentation of interviews, photographs, and maps probably a hundred people came. And thanks to that set of events, we have more letters, not only about the flood, to scan and add to our collection.

This Friday we have another event: our annual Wine Tasting.

The wine tasting is a great way to sample local food, dozens of types of wine both international and local, increasingly more types of beer, and possibly some specialty items. You will be able to order wine and beer at great prices as well.

But it is also our main fundraiser for the year. We hope to see you there, in support of  history and in the support of making that history known to this and future generations.

For just one example, the virtual map, which we want to add to, would not be possible without such support.

Tickets will be $25 at the door. Ski Sundown, New Hartford, CT. 6-9pm, September 11th, 2015

Save the Date!

10th Annual Wine Tasting Fundraiser

Our tenth annual wine tasting is on September 12th, Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Ski Sundown, New Hartford Ct.

The main fundraising event of the year for the society; this event has become the kick-off event for the winter season in New Hartford, with many people coming back into town after the summer away. Good wine, good food, good music, and good conversation, at a pleasant location. Tickets will be $25 at the door.

The wine ranges from Chile and Australia to Europe to California to Connecticut. The food is all by local restaurants and stores; it showcases many of the best restaurants in the area. Where else can you get a chance to try dozens of wines, and a few beers, get a good supper, and listen to some good music….all for twenty-five dollars?

We hope to see you there!

Viticulture in New Hartford

We hope you will join us Friday, September 14th, at our wine-tasting fundraiser at Ski Sundown from 6-9pm.

There is no known record of any pre-twentieth century wineries in New Hartford.  However, it was probably a well established home business and wine may well have been sold or used as barter.  Wild grapes grow well in the hills as do domestic grapes.  New Hartford did have several large cider mills in the nineteenth century, which would have made hard cider.  Wines made from grapes, pears (perry), berries, dandelions, and other plants were all commonly made by farmers in New England.  Even in urban areas, home brewing flourished; especially in the Italian immigrant neighbourhoods where the art of raising grapes in tiny backyards was perfected.  Wines and other spirits were as, or more, common than beer.

Today there are two commercial vineyards in New Hartford, Connecticut, both established in the last few decades.

For an excellent introduction to the history of wine making throughout Connecticut, see the Connecticut Historical Society’s article: http://connecticuthistory.org/raise-a-glass-to-winemaking-in-connecticut/
